The Department of English was established in 2002. It is one of the oldest departments in the college offering students both BA and MA programmes. It became post graduate department in 2005. The objectives of the courses are to enhance existing knowledge of English Studies in the areas of Sociolinguistics, World Englishes and Postcolonial Theory and Literature along with developing the capacity for critical thinking and applied research skills through an engagement with the reading, classroom discussions, and assignments for the course. We believe in the power of word to create and transform, to nurture and nourish. Our academic activities are aimed at enhancing the communicative and interpretive skills of our students. The Department attained independent status in October 2001. We follow Choice Based Credit Semester System (introduced in 2009-’10) and CUCSS with grading system for evaluation (introduced in 2010-’11).
The Department offered UGC sponsored Add on Course on Communication Skills, for the whole college. The extension programmes of the Department include English for Employability Programme for Kudumbasree Members, Remedial Classes, and Free Tuition for school students. The Septuagenarian Forum is the flagship of the Department. The clubs like Literary Club and Histrionics Club are functioning actively in the Department.
