The Department of Physics, established in 1982, offers B.Sc. (Aided, since 1995), M.Sc. (Self-financing, since 2002), and B.Sc. (Honours, Aided, since 2024 under the FYUGP regulations) Programmes, and has consistently upheld a reputation for academic excellence. It focuses on nurturing competent physicists with creativity, adaptability, ethical values, and social responsibility, preparing them for leadership in academia and beyond.
The Department is supported by well-equipped, modern laboratories upgraded after the 2018 floods, ensuring high-quality practical training. It was also one of the three science departments selected under the DBT ‘STAR COLLEGE’ Scheme (2018–2021), an initiative of the Government of India aimed at strengthening undergraduate science education with a strong emphasis on practical training and holistic development.
The Energy Club of the Department actively promotes awareness and initiatives on energy conservation and sustainability. The Department also organizes astronomy outreach and extension activities to cultivate scientific temper among students and the wider public.
In 2025, the Department was recognized as a Research Centre of the University of Calicut. Currently, Dr. Reena Ittyachan serves as a research guide, supervising one Ph.D. scholar, reflecting the Department’s growing research profile.
