Regional Languages are valuable sources of understanding a race, community and culture. Knowledge of one’s own roots keeps one grounded and respectful of other cultures. At our Department, we take special care of this beautiful language so that it does not get withered away in today’s generation.

The Department of Malayalam came into existence in September 1980. In the year 1991, when the college was upgraded to a first grade college, the Department started to offer Malayalam as an optional paper to the B.A./B.Sc/B.Com students.

Malayalam being the mother tongue of Keralites, is ever in vogue among the students who are keen to understand and study their culture in detail. It is noteworthy that nearly seventy percent of degree students opt for Malayalam as the second language. The department of Malayalam is proud that its results in the university exams have been constantly brilliant throughout the preceding years.

Innovation in teaching methods

1. Project on ‘Ente gramam’ (My village)
Each student is asked to make a project on the culture and tradition of her village / locality. The student visits various places of importance of the locality to collect information, takes photographs etc. The basic objective of the project is to make the student understand the local history by personally exploring and experiencing it. Apart from making the student proud of her native and mother tongue, the project also trains the student in writing local history. The project is presented as a written document with facts, figures and pictures or as a power point presentation.

2. Arnos Pathiri Chamber (Malayalam Language and Cultural Study Centre)
The Department of Malayalam has established a centre for Malayalam Language and Cultural Studies. Portraits of Malayalam writers and pictures representing Kerala culture are mounted on the walls of the Center.

3. Archive of digital resources
The Department has a collection of cinemas, documentaries, visuals of folklore, festivals, sound track of Malayalam writers in digital format.
