The department celebrates World Environment Day on the 5th of June every year by planting saplings, organising awareness talks, mime related to the theme for that year etc. Students are actively involved in conducting various awareness campaigns. Brisk walks and distribution of gooseberry to spread awareness on Diabetes Day, distribution of “chukka kaapi” as a part of awareness of monsoon diseases were some of the issues that were addressed. The students organise events to welcome the first years to make them feel at home and also conduct farewell functions for the final year students. Exhibitions on various themes are also organised by the students. The students prepare ZASHC voice – a hand-written manuscript magazine and “Jeeva” a yearly departmental newsletter giving the news events of the past year and published every year. Every year the students go on a study tour visit places of zoological interest as a part of their curriculum. In this regard the staff and students have been to places such as Valparai, Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad, Wayanad, Bandipur National Park, Ranganthittu Bird sanctuary, Mysore etc. The students are encouraged to participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as quiz, power point presentation competitions, debates etc. at the college level on several topics. In order to increase social awareness among students students are taken to visit places such as Anugraha Sadan (a home for the physically and mentally challenged children) Koodapuzha and Sssmile village, Vettikuzhy as a part of their Christmas celebrations.

The “BIOTA” Club for Awareness, Conservation and of Biodiversity was started in 2011 where importance to both plants and animals are given. The aim of the club was to conduct various activities related to biodiversity – such as Quiz programs, poster making competitions as well as classes on different aspects of biodiversity. A field visit is organised as a part of the club activities to biodiversity rich areas each year. The year 2010 was declared as the year of Biodiversity by United Nations and this club was started to commemorate this year. Each year a president and secretary were elected for the club who were responsible for conduct and reporting of activities of the club.

The staff of the department have been invited to give talks both in the college and in other institutions on various topics like awareness on diabetes, life style diseases etc. They regularly publish their research findings in peer reviewed journals.

20/03/2023 – Oral Health Day Programme

The Indian Dental Association, Chalakudy Branch in association with Annoor Dental College and Hospital, Muvattupuzha conducted an awareness program and oral health check up. The program began with inaugural session with Dr. Kiren Thaliyeth delivering the inaugural address after lighting the inaugural lamp. This was followed by an awareness class by Dr. Geon Pauly and Dr. Navami Ashok who spoke about various topics related to oral hygiene and its importance.

1/12/2022 – Inauguration of Zoology Association

The inauguration of the Zoology Association and a invited lecture on “Crab culture as a career opportunity” was given by Dr. Josileen Jose., Principal Scientist, CMFRI.

Students took an oath on International Day for violence against women.

14-15/11/2022 – Commemoration of World Diabetes Day

Students took an oath to lead a healthy lifestyle to prevent lifestyle diseases such as Diabetes. A brisk walk to the neighbourhood village and distribution of gooseberry among the local created an awareness about this disease among the public. A “diabetic” juice drinking competition helped the students to participate in the commemoration of this day.

12/10/2022 – Commemoration of Salim Ali Day

Students were taken to Kottat wetlands where our resource person Ms. Siji, Ornithologist and bird watcher was able to show the students how to identify the birds that visited the area.

12/7/2022 – Celebrating World Plastic Bag Free Day

Students of the department made hand-made paper bags which were distributed to all the teachers of various departments to spread the awareness about the dangers of single-use plastics.

29/7/2017 – World Tiger Day

The department of Zoology in association with Kerala Social Forestry, Department of Forests conducted various programs such as awareness rally, quiz competition for college students and painting competition for high school students.
