We believe that the overall development and growth of a student happens outside the classroom as well. For this the college promotes a wide variety of activities, which will help in the improvement of their cultural, artistic, athletic and social development. The College Students Union is an elected body of the students of the College for the promotion of the practice of democracy and leadership qualities among the students of the College. The union functions under the guidance of a Staff Adviser appointed by the Principal. The objectives of the Student’s Union are to promote and coordinate social and cultural activities of students, and to create in them an awareness of civil duties and rights.
The College Union Council consists of the following members:
1 The President of the union
2 The staff Advisor
3 The Chairperson
4 The vice-Chairperson
7 The General Secretary
8 The Joint Secretary
9 Two Councillors to the Calicut University Union of the College Union
10 Fine Arts Secretary
11 Chief Student Editor of the College magazine
12 General Captain (Sports & Games)
13 The Secretary of each of the various (main subject-wise) Subject Association of the college.
14 One representative each of I D.C., II D.C. and III D.C elected by the students of the respective classes and one representative elected by all the post graduate students.
Out of these the Principal and staff advisor cannot vote. Each year the College Student’s Union members are elected according to the parliamentary mode. At the first level two student representatives are elected from each class. The students of the department elect 2 class representatives from the nominated list of students. 2 representatives from each class then attend a parliamentary mode of election. Nominees for the various posts can talk about themselves, the principles that they stand for, or the activities that they wish to do if elected in
the “Meet the candidate” program held a few days before the actual election. The College Union elections are conducted only by orders of the University of Calicut. The dates for these are given only after the first year students are admitted into the college so that they can also participate in the election process. The election to the College Union is conducted based on the Parliamentary model as per para 6.2.4 of the J M Lyngdoh Commission Report and the order passed by the Supreme Court of India in SLP No. 24295/2004 and the High court of Kerala. The College Union comprises a students 'general council and an executive. All students are members of the students' general council. In addition there are representatives for each year of UG and PG courses and secretaries for each of the subject associations.
As the University of Calicut follows the Centralised Admission Process under the Single window system, the first year students arrive a lot later than the start of the academic year on 1 st June. For this reason the activities of the Students Union are organised by the students of the College Union of the previous academic year. After the union elections, the New College Union of that academic year takes over.
During the academic year 2020 – 21 because of the Covid pandemic, classes were being conducted online and the University of Calicut did not give the colleges affiliated to it any instructions regarding the conduct of the Student’s Union elections. However it was found that the teachers and management of the college were unable to connect with all the students for any activity of the college. For this purpose the Principal asked the teacher in charge to form a group for 1 leader from each class so instructions and feedback from the students could be collected through them instead of asking each student individually.
The list of elected Students Union members and the report of their activities during academic years 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 are given below.
