Water is a vital resource essential for the sustenance of life and the functioning of ecosystems. At Sacred Heart College, Chalakudy, we recognize the importance of water conservation not only for environmental sustainability but also for responsible resource management. As part of our commitment to fostering a sustainable campus environment, we are implementing a comprehensive Water Conservation Policy aimed at reducing water consumption and promoting efficient usage across all campus operations.
Objective
The primary objective of this Water Conservation Policy is to establish a framework for minimizing water usage on campus while ensuring that the needs of the institution are met. This policy seeks to:
- Reduce Water Consumption: Implement measures and practices that significantly lower the amount of water used in all campus facilities.
- Promote Awareness: Educate students, faculty, and staff about the importance of water conservation and encourage responsible behaviour.
- Enhance Efficiency: Upgrade infrastructure and adopt technologies that improve water efficiency and management.
- Monitor and Report: Regularly track water usage and conservation efforts to ensure the effectiveness of the policy and identify areas for improvement.
Scope
This policy applies to all members of the Sacred Heart community, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors. It encompasses all campus facilities and operations, including but not limited to:
- Academic Buildings: Classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and administrative offices.
- Residential Areas: Dormitories, apartments, and other housing facilities.
- Recreational and Athletic Facilities: Gyms, pools, and sports fields.
- Landscaping and Grounds: Gardens, lawns, and other outdoor spaces.
The policy outlines specific measures and practices for each area, aiming for a unified approach to water conservation across the campus.
The aim of the policy is to minimise water usage and conserve water. We strive to follow National Water Policy guidelines in the campus by adopting water conservation measures.
- Measures are taken to undertake annual water audit in the institution. In the campus, water conservation is mainly done by rainwater harvesting. During rainy season, rainwater is collected and directed to the wells for percolation.
- Open well and bore well are maintained in the campus to meet water requirements. Measures are taken to conserve water like bunds, rain pits, well and ground water recharging.
- Sensitization on Water conservation is promoted by planting trees, by conducting green campus promotion activities and by organizing seminars and workshops.
- Restricted and optimal utilization of water should be ensured by the staff and students of the college.
- Reusing and recycling water is done to reduce the usage of water. Recycled water is used for Irrigation purposes inside the campus.
- Extension activities are organized to sensitize and educate the local community about the importance of water and the methods to conserve it.
- Improving water quality by cleaning the water bodies and by controlling garbage disposals in the water bodies.
